Worshipful Brother J. R. Cully has chronicled a history of the first 50 years of
Undine Lodge on the pervious page. What follows is an account of events from his
last history in 1959 on page one up until Undine's 75th anniversary which was
celebrated on the 30th of November 1984 at the Loughton Masonic Hall. Members of
Undine are currently compiling the last 25 years for the Centenary celebrations
which will take place in November 2009.
1961
The death of RW. Bro. Rev. Canon R. Stafford Morris, the
Provincial Grand Master of
1963 Goodwill
Lodge (No. 7904) was consecrated as a daughter lodge of Undine. W. Bro. T.
Pearce was a founder-member and its first Master. Bro. D. Hammond was also a
founder and Undine members filled all the major offices prior to the
consecration ceremony. Undine Lodge contribution to the annual festival for the
Royal Masonic Institute for Girls exceeded its target of £ 1,000. The festival
was presided over by the Provincial Grand Master, the Right Hon. Earl of
1964
w. Bro. S. Hodges was appointed Chaplain, replacing w. Bro. A. Willesden on his
retiring from office. Grand Chapter rank was conferred upon W. Bro. T. Pearce.
1965 The Initiation fee was raised to twenty-five guineas. The Lodge declined
to adopt the permissive variations to the ritual, with respect to penalties
within the Obligations. A recent Master of the Lodge passed away at an early
age. To mark the 250th anniversary of Grand Lodge, the brethren were each
invited to contribute £1.00 to a fund. The income from the total of £500,000
collected was placed at the disposal of the Royal College of Surgeons.
1966
The last surviving founder-member, W. Bro. J. R. Cully, died in June. He had
become a father-figure to the brethren, having written two histories of the
Lodge and served as its Treasurer for thirty years. He was appointed Grand Pursuivant in 1936.
W. Bro. Westrip, who had
been
W. Bro. Eric Hall was appointed Chaplain.
The brethren were asked to donate to a fund for renovating the Lodge Banner.
1967 H.R.H. the Duke of Kent was elected as M.W. Grand Master.
1968 An emergency meeting was held in May to raise Bro. Robert Hutchins, prior
to his emigration to
1969 The death of the Earl of Scarborough. He had been a Past Grand Master for
eighteen years. All lodges observed a six- month period of mourning.
1970
Bro. Herbert Singleton died after a lifetime of service. He had been Secretary
of the lodge and lodge of instruction for over twenty years. W. Bro. Frank Tame
assumed the duties of Lodge Secretary.
A
regular and popular visitor, W. Bro. Albert Meadows, died. A donation was made
to charity in his memory.
W. Bro. Arthur Ellis was elected as Treasurer,
following the resignation of W. Bro. George Langdon from this office.
1971
Continuing inflation called for an increase in the Initiation fee to £40.
1972
W. Bro. Eric Hall found that travelling difficulties
and personal commitments precluded regular attendance and he resigned from the
office of Chaplain. Many tributes were paid to his past service. W. Bro. Gus
Harvey was appointed Chaplain.
1973
The Bagshaw Lodge (No. 1457), mother Lodge of Undine, celebrated its centenary
year.
Bro. Ash died, leaving a generous legacy to Lodge funds.
